The Ossila Bar Coater in this configuration pairs the Automatic Film Applicator with a vacuum-bed stage and a set of 16 formed Mayer rods. It is built for laboratory-scale film optimization, producing uniform large-area coatings with wet thicknesses from 6 µm to 200 µm.
The applicator drives the bar at programmable speeds between 0.05 and 250 mm.s -1 in 0.01 mm.s -1 steps, keeping speed and pressure consistent from run to run. Its travel length reaches 290 mm (A4) and the coating width reaches 225 mm, and it accepts Mayer bars from 220 mm to 255 mm long. Blade coaters, Sheen applicators and Bird applicators can also be used with the system.
The anodized aluminum vacuum stage holds flexible and foil substrates flat and still, which helps avoid defects. Formed rods are sturdier than wire-wound bars and resist damage and contamination, with a controlled groove packing density. A quick lock design makes it easy to clean the stage and drip tray between coatings.
- Optimizing thin-film coating processes at laboratory scale.
- Coating flexible or foil substrates held in place on the vacuum stage.
- Producing uniform large-area films on sheet samples up to A4 size.
- Comparing wet film thicknesses from 6 µm to 200 µm using the included Mayer rod set.
- Running blade, Sheen or Bird applicators on the same automated platform.

Keep the substrate and the bar coater clean before each run, because dirt or debris can cause defects that run through the entire film. Hold the substrate firmly in place during coating, and use a spirit level to make sure the machine is level in all directions.
