The Ossila Bar Coater is an automatic film applicator for producing uniform thin films over large areas at laboratory scale. This configuration pairs a durable 8 mm toughened glass stage with a printed grid and a set of 16 formed Mayer rods, which are sturdier than wire-wound bars, resist damage and contamination, and offer well-controlled groove packing.
Bar travel is motor-controlled between 0.05 and 250 mm.s -1 in 0.01 mm.s -1 steps, keeping speed and pressure consistent from run to run. The stage travels up to 290 mm (A4) and supports coating widths up to 225 mm, accepting Mayer bars from 220 mm to 255 mm long. The included rods give wet film thicknesses from 6 µm to 200 µm, with thickness scaling roughly linearly with groove size.
A quick lock design makes cleaning the stage and drip tray between coatings straightforward. The system also works with other coating tools such as blade coaters, Sheen applicators and Bird applicators. The kit contains the applicator, the formed Mayer rod set and a power supply.

Clean the substrate and rods before each coating, as dirt or debris can create defects running through the whole film. Hold the substrate firmly in place and use a spirit level to make sure the machine is level in all directions for uniform coating across the width.
