Description
Glutaryl Chloride is the acid dichloride of glutaric acid — a five-carbon chain compound bearing highly reactive acid chloride groups at both ends. Its role in the laboratory is that of a bifunctional acylating reagent, capable of joining two nucleophiles at once or building polymer chains through polycondensation reactions. Because acid chlorides are far more reactive than free carboxylic acids, reactions proceed rapidly at low temperature, which makes this reagent well suited to substrates that cannot tolerate prolonged heating or harsh acid-catalyst conditions.
Its principal characteristics are a liquid form at room temperature, which makes volumetric measurement straightforward, together with high reactivity toward amines, alcohols, and water. The two acyl chloride groups are separated by three methylene units, giving exactly the chain spacing and flexibility needed to form amides, esters, and cyclic imides. This property is what makes the compound a mainstay in the synthesis of polyamides and polyesters via interfacial polycondensation — a classic experiment that is also frequently demonstrated in polymer chemistry teaching laboratories.
As a consequence of that reactivity, the compound is highly sensitive to moisture and must be handled with appropriate care in Indonesian laboratories, where ambient humidity is consistently high throughout the year. Academic research groups, polymer chemistry teaching laboratories, and synthetic organic laboratories preparing amide and ester derivatives are the typical users. Work is generally carried out under dry conditions, with the container kept closed between transfers so that reagent quality is preserved across repeated use.

- Interfacial polycondensation for polyamide synthesis, where the two terminal acid chloride groups react rapidly with a diamine at the boundary between two immiscible phases without heating.
- Polyester preparation through polycondensation with diols, taking advantage of acid chloride reactivity that far exceeds that of the corresponding free carboxylic acid under mild conditions.

Handling and Storage
