Sudan IV from TCI is a red, fat-soluble azo dye (lysochrome) in the oil dye group, supplied for research and experimental use. In the laboratory, Sudan IV is mainly used to stain lipids, triglycerides and neutral fats in tissue sections and other samples. The stain turns lipid droplets a clear red under the microscope. It has a long history in histology, experimental pathology and biological research. It is also used to colour oils, waxes and other nonpolar materials in materials studies, where visible marking of the fatty or oily phase is needed.
Sudan IV is chosen because it dissolves readily in fats but only poorly in water. The staining works physically rather than chemically: the dye moves out of its solvent and into the lipid because it is more soluble there. As a result, neutral fats are stained selectively and show strong red contrast against the surrounding material. The deep, stable colour makes photomicrography and visual assessment easier. Compared with some other lipid stains, Sudan IV gives a stronger red, which is why many laboratories prefer it for frozen tissue sections and fatty plaques.
In Indonesia, Sudan IV is useful to histology and pathology laboratories in medical and veterinary faculties, where lipid staining is part of routine teaching and research. Biology research groups studying fat accumulation in tissues can also use it, as can laboratories that need to stain oils, waxes or other nonpolar substances. Because it is a TCI reagent intended for research and experimental use, it suits academic, institutional and industrial research laboratories that need a well-known, reliable oil dye for lipid visualisation.

- Lipid staining in frozen tissue sections: Sudan IV moves into neutral fats and triglycerides, so lipid droplets show up as a clear red that is easy to see under the microscope.
- Visualising fatty plaques in experimental pathology: the dye's strong red colour gives high contrast, which makes it easier to see and assess the extent of fat deposits in research specimens.
- Histology teaching and practical sessions: Sudan IV is a long-established lipid stain with a simple physical staining principle, so it works well for showing students how lysochrome dyes behave.
- Biological research on fat accumulation: the dye stains neutral fats selectively in tissue and other samples, which supports visual evaluation and photomicrography of lipid content.
- Colouring oils, waxes and nonpolar materials: Sudan IV dissolves readily in fats and poorly in water, so it can mark the oily or nonpolar phase clearly in materials studies.

| Storage | keep the container tightly closed in a cool, dry place away from light |
Store Sudan IV in its original container, tightly closed, in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct light, heat and incompatible substances. Protecting it from moisture and light helps the dye keep its quality over time. Label all prepared staining solutions clearly and store them in suitable closed glass containers. Handle the powder in a well-ventilated area or fume hood so that you do not breathe in dust. Wear laboratory gloves, safety glasses and a lab coat, because the dye stains skin, clothing and surfaces strongly. Avoid contact with eyes and skin, and wash thoroughly after handling. Before use, read the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) from the manufacturer, and dispose of waste and used solutions according to your institution's chemical waste rules.
