Cyclodextrins — a collection of hollow cyclic oligosaccharides—alpha, beta, or methylated and esterified derivatives—that form hydrophobic cavities capable of trapping guest molecules of suitable size. This inclusion property makes cyclodextrins the main host materials in supramolecular chemistry.

Cyclodextrins are used by supramolecular chemistry and functional materials researchers to form inclusion complexes with guest molecules such as porphyrins, to increase the solubility of hydrophobic compounds, or to assemble rotaxane-based structures. Methylated derivatives such as those in cyclodextrin-substituted porphyrins are used to design molecular receptors and inclusion-based systems, while triacetyl-beta-cyclodextrin is used as a host material with organic solvent solubility different from its original form.
