TCI C0870 p-Tolyl Phenylacetate (CAS 101-94-0) is an aromatic ester formed from phenylacetic acid and p-cresol, linking two aryl rings through an ester and a methylene bridge. As a phenolic ester it is more readily hydrolyzed, aminolyzed, or transesterified than typical alkyl esters, which makes it a convenient model substrate for ester mechanism studies and esterase activity assays. The methylene group alpha to the carbonyl can also be deprotonated for further alkylation, extending its usefulness as a synthetic building block. Supplied as a solid in a 25g pack, it should be stored cool, dry, protected from light, and kept away from strong bases and oxidizers.
