Clofibrate is the ethyl ester of 2-(4-chlorophenoxy)isobutyric acid and a classic member of the fibrate class of compounds. In research settings it is widely cited as a reference PPARα agonist and is used to study lipid metabolism, hepatic biochemistry, and related cellular responses. Its ester group is readily hydrolysed to the corresponding free acid, making it a useful substrate in esterase and prodrug conversion studies, as well as a reference standard in HPLC and LC-MS method development.
