TCI D3924, 1,2-Dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine — more commonly known by the abbreviation DMPC — is a synthetic phospholipid built from two saturated fourteen-carbon myristic acid chains esterified to a glycerol backbone in the sn configuration, together with a phosphocholine head group. In the laboratory it functions as a building block for artificial membranes: it forms liposomes, unilamellar vesicles, mixed micelles, and supported lipid bilayers that serve as simplified models of living cell membranes. Its role is especially central in research on drug delivery systems.
The main characteristic that makes DMPC such a widely chosen lipid is its phase transition temperature, which is low among the saturated phosphatidylcholines because its acyl chains are relatively short.
