Triflate Formation [Coupling Reagents] — covers reagents based on trifluoromethanesulfonyl (triflyl) groups used to convert hydroxyl groups, amines, or aromatic compounds into reactive triflate or triflamide derivatives. The triflate group formed acts as an excellent leaving group in substitution and coupling reactions.

Synthetic organic chemists use these triflation reagents to convert phenols into aryl triflates, important precursors in palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions such as Suzuki or Negishi. Reagents such as N-(2-pyridyl)bis(trifluoromethanesulfonimide) are commonly used as selective triflating agents for substrates sensitive to strong basic conditions.
